Hunt Tower History

The Dixie Hunt Hotel, previously known as The Arlington Hotel, located on the Number 1 Lot in Gainesville, which is on South Main and Spring Streets, was built in 1882.  When first built, it was the only hotel in the business district of Gainesville and was the starting point for stage coaches going to Dahlonega, White Sulphur, New Holland and Porter Springs.  In 1901 the Arlington Hotel was bought by J.H. Hunt, was remodeled and became the Dixie Hunt Hotel.  Following the death of Mr. Hunt in 1925, his wife Aurora Hunt deeded the property to Brenau University. At that time, The Dixie Hunt was reported to be the only hotel to be owned and operated by a collegiate institution. Disaster struck when the tornado of 1936 destroyed the Dixie Hunt Hotel. After the building was remodeled it reopened in 1938. Today the Hunt Tower is the home of Stewart Melvin and Frost Law Firm as well as other businesses including Luna’s Restaurant.
